Medical and Nursing Students Host Depression Screening Event

Rates of depression are higher among medical students than in the general population, and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has made changing that a top priority. Medical student leaders worked with students from the School of Nursing and Health Studies to host a depression screening and information event at the Miller School this month.

Medical Student Danyelle Thomas Named Recipient of National Medical Fellowships Cadbury Award

Danyelle Thomas, a fourth-year M.D./M.P.H. student, has received the National Medical Fellowships William and Charlotte Cadbury Award. The award was presented on November 14 at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Annual Meeting in Seattle. It is given to fourth-year medical students in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement, leadership and potential for significant contributions to medicine.

Fine Art of Health Care Program Starts Up Again November 10

The Lowe Art Museum’s Fine Art of Health Care workshop series begins again on Thursday, November 10 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The purpose of the workshops is to teach students in all UM health care programs art observation techniques that will help them better interact with patients. Participation in the workshops includes free entry into the Lowe After Hours event, normally a $10 charge.

Miller School of Medicine Excels in Annual Fundraising Survey

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine made impressive gains in fundraising performance among medical schools, placing in the top 16 percent in the newest Association of American Medical Colleges Development Survey. After analyzing data from 129 institutions for the 2015 fiscal year, the survey showed that the Miller School moved up four spots from 2014, ranking 21st with total private support of $116.5 million.

Gordon Center Conducts Terrorism-Response Training for Miller School Students

Delivering emergency care to victims of a terrorist attack is a challenging task, especially if chemical or biological weapons are involved. Medical Education Conducts Skills Exercises for Third-Year Students

The University of Miami Hospital and Clinics welcomed 198 third-year Miller School of Medicine students from both the Miami and regional medical campuses for the 21st annual Objective Structured Clinical Examinations — a medical school rite of passage that tests the clinical skills of students. More than 100 faculty members served as evaluators in the annual assessment.

Fleta Netter Bray, a fourth-year student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has won first prize in a national medical essay competition held annually by the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. The Melbourne Beach, Fla., native won top honors and a $2,000 cash award in the Helen H. Glaser Student Essay Contest, and is the first Miller School student ever to win a prize in the competition.
