Dr. Mary Moore

+Mary Moore is Executive Director of the Calder Memorial Library and Biomedical Communications and Librarian Professor at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, where she has led renovation of the physical library, and the virtual library through Web services redesign. Moore was previously Executive Director of Libraries and Knowledge Management at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas. There she worked with a group of over 40 health care organizations to develop a Web site for health consumers with low health literacy. The site included a database of 17,000 health providers, facilities and support groups, and was used to recruit for clinical trials and report on research activities for the regional CTSA. She also led the implementation of the institution’s digital repository. As head of reference and customer service at the National Library of Medicine/NIH, Moore led development of an artificial intelligence agent (knowbot) that used natural language processing, and the NLM implementation of Siebel Systems (now Oracle). She also worked in the private sector in market research and competitive intelligence, as dean of a university library, as a medical distance education curriculum developer, and as a telemedicine program evaluator.

In 2004, her library was the first medical library to receive the Institute of Museum and Library Services National Award, the nation’s highest honor for excellence in public service by museums and libraries, from First Lady Laura Bush. She has received funding and awards from AT&T, Frost Bank, ISI, the National Library of Medicine/NIH, SBC, and Rittenhouse for research and projects in knowledge management and health informatics. Moore is first author on over 30 peer-reviewed papers and has delivered hundreds of professional presentations. She served on the Boards of Directors of the South Central Academic Medical Libraries and the Carver Cultural Center. She was named 2004 Alumna of the Year at the School of Information at the University of Texas in Austin.

Dr. Moore holds an MA from the University of Missouri at Columbia and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. She has taught courses in management information systems, Web research, critical appraisal of biomedical literature, and knowledge management. She has special interests in the diffusion of health innovations and health informatics, as well as text mining and pattern recognition.
