Dr. David Brown

David Brown is Founding Chief of Family Medicine (FM) and Vice Chair of the Department of Humanities, Health and Society at the Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (COM) and Founding Chair and Residency Program Director at the West Kendall Baptist Hospital (WKBH) FIU FM Residency Program and oversees the four-year COM FM curriculum integrated with the COM’s community engaged inter-professional service-learning program, the Green Family Foundation NeighborhoodHELP™ (Health Education Learning Program). Dr. Brown attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University School of Medicine and the Salinas Family Practice Residency. He previously held faculty appointments at the University of Hawaii, the University of California at San Francisco and the University of Miami. Before joining FIU, Dr. Brown practiced and taught at Jackson Health System’s Jefferson Reaves, Sr. Health Center in Overtown. He is the Co-Founder of the Historic Overtown Public Health Empowerment (HOPE) Collaborative and co-Editor of the Overtown Cookbook. He has been published in the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), Medical Teacher, Community Engaged Scholarship for Health, MedEdPORTAL, and The Qualitative Report.
