S. Barry Issenberg, MD

Barry Issenberg, M.D. is the Michael S. Gordon Professor of Medicine and Medical Education, Director of the Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education, and Senior Associate Dean for Research in Medical Education at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Issenberg is a graduate of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (1995), where he joined the faculty in 1998 at the completion of his training in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and University of Miami.

Dr. Issenberg’s career focus has been in: 1) the research, development, implementation, and evaluation of simulation and computer-based teaching and testing systems, and 2) the development and implementation of faculty development programs for teaching and research. Dr. Issenberg leads an international consortium of clinicians, nurses, educators and engineers that has published the results of several multi-center studies that have shown the effectiveness of simulation technology to teach and assess clinical skills.

Dr. Issenberg served as chair of the 14th International Ottawa Conference on the Assessment of Competence and previously served as chair of the AAMC’s Research in Medial Education (RIME) Planning Committee and chair of the AAMC’s Medical Education Research Certificate (MERC) program steering committee. Dr. Issenberg currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, the official journal of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Issenberg has recently been named Chair of the Simulation Theme Committee for the AMEE Aspire-to-Excellence program.
