Rose Maria van Zuilen, PhD

Rose Maria van Zuilen, PhD, is the Acting Associate Director of the Educational Development Office (EDO). She is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. She started her professional career in geriatric nursing and completed her doctoral degree in clinical psychology at the University in Miami. She has been involved in medical student education for over 20 years. She is currently the Director of the 4-week Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Clerkship and the 4-year Longitudinal Curriculum in Geriatrics, Pain Management and Palliative Care.

Dr. van Zuilen has an extensive record of educational scholarship. She has been involved in several major curricular initiatives at the local, state and national levels. Dr. van Zuilen was a co-investigator and lead program coordinator and evaluator for a Donald W. Reynolds Foundation grant to develop a competency based curriculum for medical students targeting key geriatric syndromes. This geriatrics UME curriculum s nationally recognized for its innovative competency based focus. Many of the educational products developed for this curriculum have been peer-reviewed and published through the AAMC MedEdPORTAL, which has allowed universities across the globe to access and use these resources. Dr. van Zuilen has a long track record of peer-reviewed educational publications and presentations at regional and national conferences. She received the 2014 Medical Education Scholarship Award (MESA) for her CME workshop on Educational Scholarship delivered at the Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA) Conference. She serves as a peer reviewer for MedEdPORTAL and several geriatrics, palliative medicine, and educational journals and conferences.

Dr. van Zuilen is a mentor for faculty and trainees and received a 2014 Excellence in Mentorship Award from UMMSM’s Women in Academic Medicine Organization. She conducts workshops and trainings in areas of educational scholarship and offers individual and group mentoring.
